Best Photography Spots Around Todra Gorge: Light, Timing & Access
Todra Gorge is one of the most photographed landscapes in Morocco — and yet most visitors come home with the same five images everyone else has. The secret to something different is timing and local knowledge. Here’s what we know.
Sunrise in the Canyon (07:15–08:30)
The first light strikes the south-facing wall at approximately 07:15 in October (earlier in summer, later in winter). For roughly 45 minutes, the wall glows a deep orange-red while the canyon floor remains in blue shadow — one of the most dramatic contrasts in landscape photography. Position yourself at the canyon entrance, facing north, with a wide-angle lens.
The Narrow Section at Noon
At midday, direct sunlight hits the canyon floor through the narrow opening above. The combination of overhead light, reflected wall colour, and the clear green river creates extraordinary colour. This is the one time of day when photographing upward (showing the sky ribbon between the walls) works best.
The Palm Grove at Sunset (17:30–18:30)
The oasis immediately south of the gorge entrance catches the last light beautifully. Position yourself at the edge of the palms looking southwest — the silhouettes of the date palms against a pink-orange sky, with the Atlas peaks behind, is an image that requires no special equipment. Just be there on time.
The Upper Canyon: Any Time
Beyond the tourist section, the upper canyon offers dramatic compression shots that are impossible at the crowded lower section. The best images here come in the mid-morning (10:00–12:00) when the walls are evenly lit from above.
